Another Great win in Camogie!!! School wins mini sevens Cumann na mBunscol Cup
After playing six gruelling matches over a period of two days, our young camogie team emerged as the best players in the county, bringing home pieces of silverwareto add to the prestigious collection in our school cabinet. as we are a large school we are disadvantaged by a cut off age ban which means we cannot play our older girls in this competition. However this did not prevent our young players fighting tooth and nail to win this much sought after title. The toughest match was the final one against a very strong Rathcoffey team played on their home ground. rathcoffey scored a goal in the first few minutes of play, leaving them ahead at half time. Naas fought back and Caoimhe put in a goal for Naas. naas had to defend like tigers to the end in order to maintain a draw. the winners were decided by their previous match scores against Nurney a nd as Naas was one goal ahead of Rathcoffey they emerged as the elated winning team. Although nail biting and tense-parents, grandparents and teachers who attended the finals were entertained to a most skillful and exciting display of camogie in glorious sunshine. The team also received lovely medals from Cumann na mBunscol which were later presented in the school by the principal, Ms O'Reilly who expressed how proud she is of the girls' achievements. A huge thank you to the two teachers involved; Mrs Betty madden and Ms Mary Coughlan for all their hard work
The
Cumann na mBunscol basketball league got off to a fantastic start for the
girls team with wins over Sallins and Prosperous. Naas 38-Sallins 10;
Prosperous 4- Naas 43.... (and thanks to Louise for the lollipops...)
2 points Naas v 1 point Kill Final of the Cumman na mBunscoil Division One Camoige Cup Moorefield GAA Grounds Referre Willie O’Reidy
Scoil an Chlochair Nas (Mercy Convent Naas) fought like tigers and won like champs to secure for four years running the Cumann na mBunscol Division One Camoige Cup against Kill at Moorefield Gaa grounds last Tuesday evening.
Bright sunshine welcomed the girls onto the Moorefield pitch for their second clash of the season; Kill and Naas meet previously at the quarter finals.
From the get go last Tuesday, it was a tense, passionate final where both teams were equally pitched and defence was strong to the bone.
Almost immediately Naas got a free where Roisin scored the opening point from the sidelines. Indeed throughout the intense final, the Naas centre back delivered a calm, cool and collected display of excellent defending in making a number of key clearances.
There were some great blocking and tackling from a hard working Naas defence, Ellen , Molly and Emer , and brilliant saves from Grainne to stop several shots going into the top corner.
It was a very tough first half with each team having about the same amount of possession. Only just a few minutes before half time Naas converted another free from the determined Roisin giving them the lead into half time.
In the second half, both Naas and Kill came out more determined than ever to win. It started with the same amount of intensity as the first with both teams striking the ball superbly, hooking and blocking competently.
Within a few minutes of the restart Kill’s Emily and Caroline switched positions which allowed Emily to receive a pass from Caroline’s puck out and solo nearly the length of the pitch before putting the ball over the bar. However, this proved to be the only score Kill got on the day.
There were impressive solo runs by Naas’s Lorna , Kelly and Aisling but the strong defence of Kill and the superb work of its goalkeeper Georgina F kept it at two points.
Kill’s back Emma and Emily worked tirelessly throughout to keep a strong Naas midfield – Megan and Hannah - at bay.
Naas did deserve to score given the amount of play they had in its half, however the Kill girls challenged strongly for every ball. And likewise Naas did all that was asked of them to repel every attack.
This final was unlike any other camogie match because there wasn’t one single goal scored from either team and the reason for this was simply due to the determination of both goalkeepers and defenders.
With the sound of the final whistle there were screams of delight and relief from the Naas side with sheer disappointment from the Kill.
It was heartening to see so many of the girls produce their best display of the season. Indeed it was a nail biter final, full of drama right to the end.
Sea O Dea from Kildare Cumann na mBunscol presented Naas captain Roisin with the Division One Camoige Cup, who thanked coach Ms Coughlan, Eamonn Callaghan and runner ups Kill. A delighted Betty Madden, camoige co-ordinator for Mercy Convent Naas, paid tribute to the girls on their hard work, excellent performance for the year and the high standard of both teams. “It’s a great honour for the school to win this cup four times in a row, a great achievement and we are very proud.”
