Naas went in for the Kill

2 points Naas v 1 point Kill

Final of the Cumman na mBunscoil Division One Camoige Cup

Moorefield GAA Grounds

Referre Willie O’Reidy

Scoil an Chlochair Nas (Mercy Convent Naas) fought like tigers and won like champs to secure for four years running the Cumann na mBunscol Division One Camoige Cup against Kill at Moorefield Gaa grounds last Tuesday evening.

Bright sunshine welcomed the girls onto the Moorefield pitch for their second clash of the season; Kill and Naas meet previously at the quarter finals.

From the get go last Tuesday, it was a tense, passionate final where both teams were equally pitched and defence was strong to the bone.

Almost immediately Naas got a free where Roisin  scored the opening point from the sidelines. Indeed throughout the intense final, the Naas centre back delivered a calm, cool and collected display of excellent defending in making a number of key clearances.

There were some great blocking and tackling from a hard working Naas defence, Ellen , Molly  and Emer , and brilliant saves from Grainne  to stop several shots going into the top corner.

It was a very tough first half with each team having about the same amount of possession. Only just a few minutes before half time Naas converted another free from the determined Roisin  giving them the lead into half time.

In the second half, both Naas and Kill came out more determined than ever to win. It started with the same amount of intensity as the first with both teams striking the ball superbly, hooking and blocking competently.

Within a few minutes of the restart Kill’s Emily and Caroline switched positions which allowed Emily to receive a pass from Caroline’s puck out and solo nearly the length of the pitch before putting the ball over the bar. However, this proved to be the only score Kill got on the day.

There were impressive solo runs by Naas’s Lorna , Kelly and Aisling but the strong defence of Kill and the superb work of its goalkeeper Georgina F kept it at two points.

Kill’s back Emma and Emily  worked tirelessly throughout to keep a strong Naas midfield – Megan  and Hannah  - at bay.

Naas did deserve to score given the amount of play they had in its half, however the Kill girls challenged strongly for every ball. And likewise Naas did all that was asked of them to repel every attack.

This final was unlike any other camogie match because there wasn’t one single goal scored from either team and the reason for this was simply due to the determination of both goalkeepers and defenders.

With the sound of the final whistle there were screams of delight and relief from the Naas side with sheer disappointment from the Kill.

It was heartening to see so many of the girls produce their best display of the season. Indeed it was a nail biter final, full of drama right to the end.

Sea O Dea from Kildare Cumann na mBunscol presented Naas captain Roisin with the Division One Camoige Cup, who thanked coach Ms Coughlan, Eamonn Callaghan and runner ups Kill. A delighted Betty Madden, camoige co-ordinator for Mercy Convent Naas, paid tribute to the girls on their hard work, excellent performance for the year and the high standard of both teams. “It’s a great honour for the school to win this cup four times in a row, a great achievement and we are very proud.”

Coin Hunt for Haiti

Following the disastrous earthquake in Haiti, it was decided that the children in the school be afforded an opportunity to play their part in helping to bring some relief to victims.

A 'Coin Hunt' was launched to help raise funds. There was a tremdous response to the appeal and the total amount raised came to 5,600 euro.

This money has been lodged to The Gena Heraty Haiti Fund.

Mayo woman, Gena Heraty has dedicated the past 16 years of her life to the children of Haiti. She runs a special needs home for abandoned children with physical and mnetal disabilities. The orphanage caters for about 500 children altogether.

By donating the money to this charity we are continuing the traditon in the school of children helping children. We are assured that all the money donated wil go directly to the to the children for whom Gena Heraty cares.

Thanks to the children who were so enthusiastic and gave so generously. Thanks also to the parents and other family members who daonated money and, in these challenging times in our own country, supported children in remembering children less well off than themselves in Haiti.

Thank you to the members of staff who organised the Coffee Morning  and to those who contributed generously to it. The generosity of all will make a difference in the lives of many unfortunate children in Haiti.

Go raibh mile maith agaibh go leir.

In response to our donation, Gene herself took time out of her very busy day to email us. Read an excerpt below.

Hi Majella and all in The Convent Primary School, Naas.
Looking at these pictures made me very happy and I LOVE the cheque- not to mention the money that goes with it.I am so so happy with your efforts. I remember when I was in NS - in 6th class and we had to do a project on something. Myself and a friend of mine did it on the Third World and way back then I hoped that some day I would be able to help make a difference in the lives of those in need! That was a LONG time ago and here I am doing just that.
The money ye raised will do great work. Every day we are working with severely handicapped children and their families. Now we are also working with little kids that had legs and arms amputated. So we are giving them money and food and trying to help them get going again. It will be a LONG time before Haiti gets back to any kind of normality so all the money is greatly appreciated because we will be spending it long after people have forgotten about Haiti.
My deep thanks to you all and I hope we can keep in touch from time to time.
Best wishes,
Love Gena

Jack and Jill Phones for Boards

Our school is taking part in this project at the moment. We have already collected 500 phones and have received our 1st Interactive White Board (IWB). This was due to the great job every one in the school did recycling their phones.
We hope to get another board (or two) and are on our way there with 150 phones already towards it. So come on everyone recycle your old phone. Ask anyone you know if they have an old phone. It doesn't have to be in perfect condition. Maybe you might ne getting a new phone for Christmas so don't for get to recycle the old one.
Its up to us to help the environment and also help us to to have fun learning by getting another IWB.

Sensory Garden

During the spring we hope to embark on a new outdoor project with the children in the school. We intend to develop and cultivate a sensory vegetable garden. The children are very excited about this project. The purpose of the project is as follows:-

  • to teach science in a practical manner
  • to educate and develop the emotional senses
  • to learn about vegetables, where they come from and how they grow
  • to enjoy an outdoor, practical and educational experience at school

We need practical help to create this garden and we would like to appeal to any parents who would be able to offer assistance in any of the following areas:-

  • A truck load of sieved topsoil and a trailer load of compost
  • pressure treated wooden beams to create raised beds
  • wooden or steel lockable gate
  • wooden or steel arch
  • vegetable plants or seeds
  • bark chippings
  • old carpets

We will also need people to help with the cultivation of the garden.

If you are able to assist in any way, could you please contact the school reception on 045-876410.

We look forward to your co-operation and support

Yours Sincerely,

Jacqueline O'Reilly, Principal

Our New Sports Pitch

.

The work on our new pitch is almost complete. The goalposts will soon be erected and the markings painted on the field. Sincere thanks to the Parents' Council for providing funding for this project. We would also like to thank St. Mary's College who organised all the planning and groundwork in connection with the pitch. This work was done in conjunction with the development of their own two pitches.

The pitch was used for P.E. classes during the fine weather last summer and of course for our Sports Day. A great time was had by all!

We are very fortunate to have our own sports pitch. This will be available for our camogie and football matches during the coming school year.

Renewed thanks to the Parents Council for all their help in funding this project.

As you can see below we had a surprise but very welcome visit to our pitch a while ago...<
