A local history project about Naas

Plans of the town Hall circa 1903

The front of the town Hall shows the clock which dates to 1866 and it had to be wound up every week!

The old Town Hall

The Town Hall used to be a jail and it was also used as a workhouse. It was built in 1786. In 1904 the front of the Town Hall was renovated.

In the town Hall this room had many uses; it was the first cinema in 1902, it was a meeting room and a ball room and it was also a school room and even a school dentist came to visit!!!

Naas GAA was founded in this room in 1887.

This room also has the same ceiling since approximately 1866!

At Christmas time you could buy turkeys in the yard outside- but they had to be plucked first!

One of the first Normans who come to Naas was Maurice Fitzgerald in 1169. The Normans brought the name St David to Ireland. Other names also come from Wales for example 'Kerdiff' comes from 'Cardiff'.

One of the famous people who visited Naas came to the Town Hall in 1922, He was Michael Collins-four months to the day before he was shot! He was thirty years old.

Percy French, a famous singer and on top of the charts at the time came to sing a concert in 1894. He came on a train , arriving Naas station- where Tesco is now! He sounded like Johnny Moore.

The Mayor's chair was bought in an auction in Dublin in 1860.It is made of mahongany.

Paintings in the Town Hall by Richard Butler

Fr Peter Higgins was afraid of being hung. A person shouted thet he didn't deserve to be killed but he was executed in 1640.

Mace from Naas and 1798

In 1798 Naas was attacked by insurgents under the leadership of Michael Reynolds.

St Patrick

St Patrick came to Naas in 448 and baptised the daughters of the King Danling at Oldtown well. This well is still in Oldtown Demesne today 1500 years.

King Cearbhall

The last king of Leinster lived in Naas. He was called King Cearbhall in 904

Just up from the entrance of St David's church was the main

road of Naas.

St David's chruch was built in the 1400s.The stones used to build the church are 800 years old. When people died they got buired under the church.St Davids Church is still in use.
