Trot On Tuesday (T.O.T.)

On Tuesday 2nd March we launched our Trot on Tuesday (T.O.T.) campaign. The aim of this is to get as many of the school community as possible walking to school. THE GOLDEN BOOT AWARD will be awarded to the class that has the most walkers on a given Tuesday. There is a Junior Award (jun-2nd) and a Senior Award (3rd-6th). The BOOT will be awarded by Ms O’Reilly or Mrs Dowling each Tuesday and photos of winning classes placed on the Green Schools notice board. Winning classes will be given some Green Schools Travel prizes to raffle also.

PARK AND STRIDE is also a possibility for children who live some distance from school. Maybe you could drive half way, park your car in a safe place and walk the rest of the way.

Green schools update

Jack and Jill Phones for Boards

Our school is taking part in this project at the moment. We have already collected 500 phones and have received our 1st Interactive White Board (IWB). This was due to the great job every one in the school did recycling their phones.
We hope to get another board (or two) and are on our way there with 150 phones already towards it. So come on everyone recycle your old phone. Ask anyone you know if they have an old phone. It doesn't have to be in perfect condition. Maybe you might ne getting a new phone for Christmas so don't for get to recycle the old one.
Its up to us to help the environment and also help us to to have fun learning by getting another IWB.

Play your part in creating a cleaner environment.

REDUCE. REUSE. RECYCLE.

We recently were inspected for our 3rd Green flag. The focus of this flag was water conservation and we passed with flying colours!

The history of our Green Flag achievements to date...

Mercy Primary Raises 2nd Green Flag.

We celebrated the raising of our 2nd Green on Friday 24th November. It was a great day. It started with piper David Usher leading our committee and our guests The Sullivan Brothers out of the school into the yard where the children, teachers and invited guests were waiting. Ms O' Reilly welcomed all to the celebration and our 6th class choir sang The Mercy Anthem. Following that Ms O Reilly thanked the committee for all their hard work in helping to remind everyone about environmental issues.

Sonia and Jessica help raise the 2nd Green Flag

Next Sonia and Jessica accompanied Shane and Adrian Sullivan over to the flag and after posing for some photos they raised the second green flag as Piper David Usher played a tune. All our hard work had paid off!!!

The Sullivan Brothers at Our Green Flag Day

Great excitement followed as the Sullivans Brothers took to the stage and sang for us. They were great entertainers and had us all dancing and singing. Everyone enjoyed the day. Thanks to all our invited guests for joining us.

A big thanks to Ms Weberley and Ms. Dowling for all their help in organising this great day.

WELL DONE TO ALL Our school is currently involved in the Green Schools Programme organised by “An Taisce.” We got our first green flag, for recycling, in school year 2003-2004.

We retained this flag and won a second in 2006. This flag was for Energy awareness.

This year 2006/07 we will start working to obtain our 3rd flag. The theme of this project is water conservation. We will shortly be working on this in school and will be keeping you informed here on how water can be saved...so watch this space for updates.

While you wait for our updates why not check out www.taptips.ie for lots of ideas.

Niall Quinn raised our first green flag for us.

To receive the first green flag we:

·        Stopped using our burner. We planted flowers in it and painted it.

·        We separated our rubbish into 3 categories: paper, compost and normal, with a bin for each.

·        We set a target to reduce our non-recyclable rubbish by 50% but not only did we reach our target we reduced it by a further 10%. (60% in total).

·        We also painted our oil tank.

·        We grew a vegetable garden and planted lots of trees and flowers.

·        We encouraged pupils to bring in old batteries and mobile phones to be recycled.

To receive the second green flag we:

·        Switched the computers to an energy saving mode.

·        Brought to the attention of staff and pupils of the facts that the lights needed to be switched off when they are not needed and to close the windows and doors when the radiators are on. We have already seen a wonderful improvement in this area.

Now it's onward towards our 3rd Flag

As well as entering the green schools programme we entered into the ESB National Environmental Awareness programme. We came second. The Den’s Geri Maye presented the award in the Dolmen in Carlow.

Collecting 2nd prize in the ESB Environment Competition

The hard work that is put into the programme by pupils, staff and parents is overseen by the Green Schools Committee, which consists of 6 pupils from fourth to sixth classes and four members of staff.

So use our Green School motto and

“Think green and be part of our team”.
